Starting Small and Smart — A Conversation That Sparked a Business Journey

A focused woman in a business suit sitting at a desk, working on a laptop in a modern office environment.

A few weeks ago, a close friend reached out with both excitement and hesitation. She had an idea for a business, but like many new entrepreneurs, she was caught in the whirlwind of questions:

Where do I even begin? Should I chase investors first? Should I build a big online presence before I even have clients? What if I fail before I even start?

Over virtual coffee, we had one of those conversations that reminded me why I love storytelling—not just in business, but in life. Storytelling gives us a way to cut through the noise, to find clarity in all the uncertainty.

I told her: “You don’t need to start big. You need to start smart.”

We unpacked what that meant. Starting small doesn’t mean thinking small—it means being intentional. It’s about testing the idea without drowning in expenses or expectations. It’s about learning fast, listening closely, and adjusting before too much is on the line.

Instead of obsessing over being perfect, we focused on the first step: identifying the real problem she wanted to solve and the people she wanted to serve. When you’re clear on those two things, the rest starts to take shape.

To make it real, I shared an example I’d seen recently on LinkedIn: a startup that invested over $300,000 USD, only to discover that while their clients (hospitals) liked the product, it wasn’t what they actually needed at the time. The lesson? Money and resources don’t guarantee success—listening does. And often, starting small is what keeps you close enough to truly listen.

That story shifted her perspective. She realized it wasn’t about competing with big names or launching with all the bells and whistles on day one. It was about laying a foundation, step by step, learning as she goes, and growing with intention.

Sometimes, the smartest way to begin isn’t with a leap. It’s with a steady, thoughtful first step.

In the next part of this series, I’ll share how that same conversation opened into deeper lessons: building a brand, retaining clients, and why storytelling is the heartbeat of starting passionately
